What Is a “Type 01” EN 1092-1 Plate Flange?

“Type 01” according to EN 1092-1 designates a plate flange (also called flat flange or slip-on flange). These are flat, circular discs with bolt holes around the perimeter, designed to slip over the pipe end before being welded on both the inside and outside. The EN 1092-1 standard specifies dimensions, tolerances, and material requirements for flanges used in European and international piping systems.

Tolerance EN1092-1 Plate Flanges

EN 1092-1 outlines the specifications for various types of flanges, including plate flanges (Type 01). The standard provides detailed tolerances for dimensions critical to the manufacturing and functionality of these flanges. These tolerances ensure that the flanges can be interchangeably used in piping systems while maintaining a reliable seal and proper fit with mating components.

Here are some key dimensional tolerances typically specified:

Outside Diameter (D):

This tolerance ensures that the flange fits correctly with other mating flanges and components.

Thickness (e):

The tolerance of the thickness of the flange is key for ensuring that the flange can withstand the designated pressure without failing.

Diameter of Bolt Circle (P):

Accurate bolt circle diameter is required for aligning bolt holes of mating flanges, ensuring bolts can be inserted without misalignment issues.

Diameter of Bolt Holes (d2):

The tolerance here allows a little extra space to accommodate bolts, taking into account any slight misalignments and making assembly easier.

Flange Face Surface Finish:

Though not a dimensional tolerance per se, the surface finish of the flange face where the gasket will sit is key for ensuring a proper seal. EN 1092-1 specifies requirements for the roughness of these surfaces, which is important for the sealing capability.

Bore Diameter (D1):

For plate flanges that are directly connected to the pipe, the bore diameter tolerance ensures a proper fit over the pipe without excessive space or interference, facilitating a smooth flow.

Tolerances for these dimensions are carefully defined to ensure that flanges manufactured by different producers are compatible with each other and can perform effectively in a variety of applications.
