ASME B36.10 Pipe Sizes & Schedules

ASME B36.10 Pipe Size Chart (Carbon & Alloy Steel Pipe Sizes)

The ASME B36.10 pipe size chart (also known as the steel pipe dimensions chart) is a standardized reference developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). It defines the dimensions and physical properties of welded and seamless wrought steel pipes for high and low temperatures and pressures (carbon and alloy steel only).

The chart lists the pipe’s outside diameter (OD), wall thickness (expressed as schedule numbers or, for very thick-walled pipes, in inches or millimeters), weight per unit length, and inside diameter (ID) for each nominal pipe size (NPS).

The ASME B36.10 chart applies to carbon steel pipes and alloy steel pipes. For stainless steel, duplex, super duplex, and nickel alloy pipes (as well as other non-ferrous pipes), the ASME B36.19 pipe size chart must be applied.

ASME B36.19 Pipe Size Chart (for Stainless/nickel Alloy Pipes)

The ASME B36.19 pipe size chart is a standardized chart developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) that specifies the dimensions and physical properties of stainless steel pipes (and higher alloyed grades) intended for high-temperature, high-pressure applications, as well as for corrosive or high-purity applications. Similar to the ASME B36.10 chart for carbon and alloy steel pipes, the B36.19 chart focuses specifically on stainless steel pipes, including seamless and welded types.

Steel Pipes Tolerances (ASME B36.10 & B36.19)

Diameter Tolerance

ASME B36.10M (carbon and alloy steel) and ASME B36.19M (stainless steel) specify pipe diameter tolerances to ensure pipes meet the required dimensions for proper fit and function in piping systems.

Tolerance levels vary by manufacturing process (seamless or welded), pipe size, and schedule (wall thickness).

ASME B36.10M & ASME B36.19M Diameter Tolerances

#Tolerance TypeDetails
1OD Tolerance for Seamless PipesNPS 1/8 to NPS 10: ±1/64 inch (±0.4 mm). NPS 12 and above: ±1% of the nominal diameter.
2OD Tolerance for Welded PipesNPS 1/8 to NPS 10: ±1/64 inch (±0.4 mm). NPS 12 and above: typically ±1% of nominal diameter, but may vary based on welding method and pipe manufacturing process. Refer to specific standards or manufacturer specifications for precise values.
3Inside Diameter (ID) ToleranceNot typically specified; inferred from the OD and wall thickness tolerances. For a specific ID tolerance, control the OD and wall thickness within the prescribed tolerances.
4Wall Thickness ToleranceGenerally ±12.5% of the nominal wall thickness for most pipe sizes and schedules as per ASME B36.10M and B36.19M.

These tolerances are general guidelines. Specific applications may require tighter tolerances, and some manufacturers offer pipes with tolerances stricter than those in the ASME standards. Always refer to the latest edition of the relevant ASME standard or consult the pipe manufacturer for the applicable tolerances for your project.

Weight Tolerance

ASME B36.10 and ASME B36.19 do not explicitly define weight tolerances for pipes. Pipe weight is derived from outside diameter, wall thickness, and material density, so weight per unit length can be calculated from these parameters.

However, actual weight varies due to manufacturing tolerances on wall thickness and diameter. For project-specific weight tolerances, refer to the manufacturer’s standards or the material grade specification.

For applications where weight precision matters (load-bearing structures, transport weight limits), consult the pipe manufacturer for the expected weight range.

Generally accepted weight tolerances for pipes are:

Pipe SizeWeighing MethodTolerance
NPS 4 (DN100, 114.3mm) and smallerWeighed in convenient lots-
NPS 12 (DN300, 323.8mm) and underWeighed individually-3.5% / +10%
Over NPS 12 (DN300, 323.8mm)Weighed individually-5% / +10%

Quantity Tolerance

ASME B36.10M and ASME B36.19M do not specify “quantity tolerances” (the acceptable variation in the number of pipes delivered versus ordered). Quantity tolerance falls under procurement contracts, project specifications, or supplier agreements.

Quantity tolerance terms are negotiated between buyer and supplier and should be clearly stated in the purchase order or contract. Common terms include:

TermDescription
Overage or Shortage AllowanceAn agreed percentage of the total order quantity that the supplier is permitted to deliver over or under the specified quantity.
Exact Quantity RequirementSome contracts may require the delivery of the exact quantity specified, with no allowance for overage or underage.
Penalties for Non-complianceContracts may specify penalties or remedial actions if the delivered quantity does not comply with the agreed terms.

For large projects, a certain percentage of overage is commonly allowed to account for installation issues, damage, or miscalculations.

Purchasing documents should clearly define how quantity tolerances are handled, including any specific requirements or exceptions.

Length Tolerance

ASME B36.10M and ASME B36.19M do not provide explicit tolerances for pipe lengths. However, standard industry practices address pipe length tolerances as follows.

Standard Pipe Lengths and Tolerances

Length TypeTolerance / Range
Fixed LengthsDefined in the purchase order. Common practice: +0 to +1/4” to +1/2” (+6 mm to +12 mm) per length, depending on total pipe length.
Random LengthsSingle random: 16 to 22 ft (4.9 to 6.7 m). Double random: 35 to 45 ft (10.7 to 13.7 m). Exact tolerance should be specified by the manufacturer or agreed in contract.
Cut LengthsTolerances similar to fixed lengths; exact values specified in the contract or project documentation standards.

Project-Specific Requirements

Engineering specifications may define length tolerances more strictly than standard practice. These project-specific requirements take precedence and are negotiated as part of the contract or purchase agreement.

Reference to Standards

Always reference the latest version of the relevant ASME standards or applicable project specifications. Where ASME standards do not define length tolerances, manufacturer standards, purchase agreements, and project specifications govern.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the actual outside diameter of a 2-inch pipe?

The actual OD of a NPS 2 (2-inch nominal) pipe is 2.375 inches (60.3 mm) ; not 2.000 inches. For sizes NPS 1/8 through NPS 12, the nominal pipe size does NOT equal the actual outside diameter. Starting from NPS 14 and above, the NPS number matches the actual OD in inches. This is because NPS originally referred to the approximate inside diameter; as wall thicknesses changed, the OD was standardized and the NPS name stayed.

What is the difference between ASME B36.10 and B36.19?

ASME B36.10M defines dimensions (OD, wall thickness, weight) for carbon steel and alloy steel welded and seamless pipes. ASME B36.19M defines dimensions for stainless steel pipes. The key difference: B36.19 uses the "S" suffix for schedules (5S, 10S, 40S, 80S) and some stainless schedules have different wall thicknesses than their B36.10 equivalents ; particularly in smaller sizes. Always verify which standard applies for your material.

How do I calculate pipe weight per meter or per foot?

Pipe weight per unit length = (OD - WT) × WT × C, where OD is outside diameter, WT is wall thickness, and C is a constant: 0.02466 kg/mm²/m for metric or 10.69 lb/in²/ft for imperial (for carbon steel, density 7.85 g/cm³). For stainless steel (density 8.0 g/cm³), multiply by 1.02. For aluminum, multiply by 0.35. Always use the nominal wall thickness ; actual weight may vary by ±10% due to manufacturing tolerances.

What is the thickest available pipe schedule?

The thickest standard schedule is XXS (Double Extra Strong), sometimes written as XXH. For example, NPS 2 XXS has a wall thickness of 0.436 inches (11.07 mm) vs. 0.154 inches for SCH 40. However, for some pipe sizes, SCH 160 can be thicker than XXS ; always check the dimensional tables for the specific NPS. For wall thicknesses beyond XXS, custom-manufactured heavy-wall pipe must be specified.
