Fire Protection Pipe Color Requirements

Fire protection pipe color is universally red across all major pipe marking standards. Under ASME A13.1, fire suppression piping uses white text on a red background (Pantone 186). NFPA 13 (Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems) and NFPA 14 (Standard for the Installation of Standpipe and Hose Systems) also require red identification for fire protection piping. This universal convention ensures that fire water supply lines are instantly recognizable in emergencies.

Fire protection piping carries water, foam, or dry chemical agents dedicated to fire suppression. Misidentifying these pipes or accidentally isolating them can have catastrophic consequences during a fire event.

Definition and Scope

Fire protection piping includes all pipes, valves, and fittings dedicated to fire suppression systems. The following services fall under the fire protection pipe color code:

When Fire Protection Pipe Color Is Required

Red pipe marking for fire protection is mandatory in:

  • All occupied industrial and commercial buildings (per OSHA and local fire codes)
  • Petroleum refineries and chemical plants (per ASME A13.1 and owner standards)
  • Offshore platforms and marine vessels (per SOLAS and flag state regulations)
  • All areas covered by NFPA fire protection standards

Valve and Equipment Marking

Fire protection valves (OS&Y gate valves, butterfly valves, alarm check valves) should also be identified with red markings or tags. Control valves that can isolate fire water supply must be supervised (locked open or electronically monitored) per NFPA 25 to prevent accidental closure.
