What Is a Pipe Plug? End Closure

A pipe plug is a solid forged fitting with a male threaded end used to close an open port, branch outlet, or pipe end in threaded piping systems. Plugs seal unused connections, close vent and drain outlets, and cap instrument taps during construction or shutdown. They are manufactured per ASME B16.11 in sizes NPS 1/8 to NPS 4.

Hex head plugs are the industry standard for oil and gas applications. They provide positive wrench engagement and visible identification.

Pipe Plug vs Pipe Cap

Both fittings close pipe ends, but the connection method differs:

Applications

  • Closing unused tee branches: A tee with one branch not yet connected receives a plug
  • Sealing vent and drain outlets: Plugs close vent/drain valves or outlets during normal operation
  • Blanking instrument taps: Unused instrument connections are plugged until instrumentation is installed
  • Hydrostatic testing: Plugs temporarily seal open connections during hydrostatic testing
  • Decommissioning: Plugging connections on decommissioned equipment

Installation

Apply appropriate thread sealant (PTFE tape or pipe dope) to the male thread before installation. Tighten to finger-tight plus the required number of turns for the thread size (typically 2-3 additional turns for NPT). Over-tightening can crack the female fitting, especially in cast bodies.

For permanent closures in critical process piping, a butt weld pipe cap provides a more reliable seal than a threaded plug.
