What Is MSS SP-43?
MSS SP-43 is the Manufacturers Standardization Society practice that covers wrought stainless steel and nickel alloy buttweld fittings manufactured to light-wall schedules (5S and 10S). These fittings match the dimensions of ASME B16.9 but with thinner walls, making them suitable for low-pressure, corrosion-resistant piping systems where the heavier schedules of standard fittings are unnecessary.
| Property | Detail |
|---|---|
| Standard | MSS SP-43 |
| Full title | Wrought and Fabricated Butt-Welding Fittings for Low Pressure, Corrosion Resistant Applications |
| Wall schedules | Schedule 5S and 10S |
| Fitting types | Elbows (90°/45° LR), tees, reducers, caps, stub ends |
| Size range | NPS 1/2 to NPS 24 |
| Materials | ASTM A403 (austenitic SS), A815 (duplex SS), B366 (nickel alloys) |
| Dimensions | Same as ASME B16.9 (center-to-end, end-to-end) |
MSS SP-43 vs ASME B16.9
| Feature | MSS SP-43 | ASME B16.9 |
|---|---|---|
| Wall schedules | 5S and 10S only | All standard schedules (40, 80, 160, etc.) |
| Materials | Stainless steel and nickel alloy only | All materials (CS, alloy, SS, nickel) |
| Dimensions | Identical to B16.9 | Reference standard |
| Pressure rating | Lower (thin wall) | Higher |
| Typical applications | Low-pressure corrosion-resistant service | General process piping |
| End preparation | Per ASME B16.25 | Per ASME B16.25 |
| Marking | Must include “SP-43” | Must include “B16.9” |
The critical distinction: MSS SP-43 fittings are NOT interchangeable with ASME B16.9 fittings in pressure calculations. The thinner wall limits the allowable working pressure.
Wall Thickness Comparison
| NPS | Schedule 5S Wall (mm) | Schedule 10S Wall (mm) | Schedule 40S Wall (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 1.65 | 2.77 | 3.91 |
| 4 | 2.77 | 3.05 | 6.02 |
| 6 | 2.77 | 3.40 | 7.11 |
| 8 | 2.77 | 3.76 | 8.18 |
| 10 | 3.40 | 4.19 | 9.27 |
| 12 | 3.96 | 4.57 | 10.31 |
Schedule 5S fittings have approximately 40-60% less wall than Schedule 40S, significantly reducing both weight and pressure capacity.
Applications
MSS SP-43 fittings are standard for:
- Food and beverage processing: Low-pressure stainless steel piping for sanitary service
- Pharmaceutical plants: Clean utility systems (purified water, WFI, clean steam)
- Chemical processing: Corrosive services where stainless or nickel alloys are required at low pressure
- Water treatment: Desalination plants, membrane systems
- HVAC systems: Chilled water and condenser water piping in stainless steel
Ordering Considerations
MSS SP-43 fittings are widely stocked in ASTM A403 WP304/304L and WP316/316L grades. Duplex and nickel alloy grades are typically made to order with lead times of 8-16 weeks.
