What Is ASTM A815? Duplex Steel Fittings
The dual-phase microstructure (approximately 50% ferrite, 50% austenite) gives duplex fittings roughly twice the yield strength of standard austenitic stainless steels like 304L or 316L, while maintaining good ductility and weldability.
Key Grades
| ASTM A815 Grade | UNS Number | Common Name | PREN | Min Yield (MPa) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WP S31803 | S31803 | Duplex 2205 (original) | ~34 | 450 |
| WP S32205 | S32205 | Duplex 2205 (improved) | ~35 | 450 |
| WP S32750 | S32750 | Super Duplex 2507 | ~42 | 550 |
| WP S32760 | S32760 | Super Duplex Zeron 100 | ~42 | 550 |
| WP S32304 | S32304 | Lean Duplex 2304 | ~26 | 400 |
| WP S32101 | S32101 | Lean Duplex LDX 2101 | ~26 | 450 |
PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) determines the corrosion resistance ranking: PREN = %Cr + 3.3(%Mo) + 16(%N). Super duplex grades require PREN >= 40.
Mechanical Properties Comparison
| Property | A815 S32205 (Duplex) | A815 S32750 (Super Duplex) | A403 WP316L (Austenitic SS) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Min yield | 450 MPa | 550 MPa | 170 MPa |
| Min tensile | 620 MPa | 795 MPa | 485 MPa |
| Elongation | 25% | 15% | 40% |
| Hardness max | 293 HBW | 310 HBW | 183 HBW |
Duplex fittings provide 2.5 to 3 times the yield strength of 316L, enabling thinner walls and lighter piping systems for equivalent pressure ratings.
Applications
ASTM A815 duplex fittings are standard in corrosion-aggressive environments:
- Offshore oil and gas: Seawater injection systems, process piping on platforms
- Subsea pipelines: Flowlines and risers in chloride-rich environments
- Chemical processing: Chloride-containing process streams, acid services
- Desalination plants: High-pressure RO membrane feed piping
- Pulp and paper: Chlorine dioxide bleaching lines
- FPSOs: Topsides process piping exposed to marine atmosphere
Testing Requirements
| Test | A815 Requirement |
|---|---|
| Tensile | Per grade (see table) |
| Charpy impact | Required at -40 degrees C (min 40 J average) |
| Ferrite content | 40-60% by volume (ASTM E562 or magnetic method) |
| Intergranular corrosion | ASTM A262 Practice E or ASTM G48 |
| Hardness | Per grade (see table) |
| Solution annealing | Mandatory (1020-1100 degrees C, water quench) |
| Hydrostatic test | Per ASTM A815 |
The ferrite content test is critical. Too little ferrite (below 40%) reduces strength and SCC resistance. Too much ferrite (above 60%) reduces toughness and corrosion resistance. Improper heat treatment is the most common cause of out-of-spec ferrite ratios.
Procurement Notes
Duplex and super duplex fittings are specialty items. Standard sizes (NPS 1/2 to NPS 12) in S32205 may be stocked by major suppliers. Super duplex grades and larger sizes are manufactured to order with lead times of 12-20 weeks. Material test certificates per EN 10204 Type 3.1 are mandatory and must include ferrite content and corrosion test results.
For matching pipe materials, see ASTM stainless and duplex pipe grades.
