When to Specify B564 Forgings

ASTM B564 forgings are specified when stainless steel and duplex grades lack the corrosion resistance or high-temperature capability for the service environment:

  • Sour gas production: Inconel 625 flanges for wellhead and flowline connections per NACE MR0175
  • HF alkylation units: Monel 400 flanges and fittings for hydrofluoric acid service
  • Chemical reactors: Hastelloy C-276 flanges for wet chlorine gas, ferric chloride, and mixed acids
  • Sulfuric acid plants: Alloy 20 flanges for hot dilute and intermediate-concentration sulfuric acid
  • Subsea production: Inconel 625 and 718 compact flanges and clamp connectors

Testing and Quality

ASTM B564 requires solution annealing (grade-specific temperatures), chemical analysis, and tensile testing. Mill test certificates per EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 must document full chemistry, mechanical properties, and heat treatment records. NDT typically includes ultrasonic examination per ASME SA-388 and liquid penetrant inspection. Hydrostatic testing follows the applicable flange standard (ASME B16.5, B16.47) or valve standard. Intergranular corrosion testing per ASTM G28 is commonly required. The forging process for nickel alloys requires higher forging temperatures and forces than steel, with procurement lead times typically 16-30 weeks.
