ASTM A216 WCB Cast Steel Explained

ASTM A216 WCB cast steel is the default cast carbon steel grade for pressure-containing components in oil and gas, petrochemical, and power generation piping systems. The designation breaks down as follows: “W” for weldable quality, “C” for carbon steel, and “B” for the mid-range grade. WCB is the cast equivalent of ASTM A105 forged steel and is used primarily for valve bodies, pump casings, and cast fittings operating from -29 degC to 425 degC.

When ASTM A216 WCB Is Specified

WCB is the standard body material for gate, globe, check, and ball valves in ASME B16.34 Material Group 1.1. It appears on virtually every refinery and petrochemical project for valves in carbon steel process piping service at ambient to moderately elevated temperatures.

WCB sits in the middle: stronger than WCA with better ductility and weldability than WCC. This balance explains its dominance as the standard cast valve body material.

Applications

WCB castings are specified for:

  • Gate valves: Bodies and bonnets per API 600, API 602
  • Globe valves: Bodies and bonnets per BS 1873, API 602
  • Check valves: Bodies per BS 1868, API 6D
  • Ball valves: Bodies per API 6D, API 608
  • Pump casings: Centrifugal pump volutes for hydrocarbon service
  • Cast fittings: Tees, elbows, and reducers where casting is more economical than forging

Quality and Testing

ASTM A216 requires chemical analysis, tensile testing, and visual examination on all castings. Supplementary requirements include radiographic examination, magnetic particle inspection, liquid penetrant testing, and repair welding procedures. All castings must be supplied with mill test certificates per EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2.
