What Is a Flange Protector?

A flange protector is a removable cover installed over the face of a pipe flange to protect the machined sealing surface from mechanical damage, corrosion, and contamination during storage, transportation, and on-site handling. Damage to the flange face finish (even a single radial scratch) can create a leak path that no gasket can seal reliably.

FeatureDetails
PurposeProtect flange face, RTJ groove, and bore from damage and contamination
When installedAfter manufacturing/machining, maintained through storage and transport
When removedImmediately before gasket installation and bolt-up
Applies toRF, FF, RTJ, and tongue-and-groove flange faces

Types of Flange Protectors

TypeMaterialProsConsTypical Use
Push-on plastic capsLDPE, HDPELow cost, lightweight, reusableLimited UV resistance, can crack in coldStandard for RF and FF flanges
Bolt-on plastic coversHDPESecure, will not fall off in transitRequires bolt holes, higher costHigh-value or subsea flanges
Metal disc shieldsCarbon steel, galvanizedDurable, reusable many timesHeavy, may damage face if droppedRTJ flanges, long-term storage
Wooden plugs/coversTreated hardwoodInexpensive, easily availableCan absorb moisture, introduce splintersTemporary on-site protection
VCI (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor) capsPlastic with VCI compoundProtects against corrosion without greaseHigher cost, limited shelf life of VCIExport shipments, marine environments
Foam-lined capsLDPE with closed-cell foamCushions face, absorbs vibrationSingle usePrecision-machined faces, RTJ grooves

Sizing

Flange protectors are sized by the flange nominal pipe size (NPS) and pressure class, which determines the outside diameter:

NPSClass 150 RF OD (mm)Class 300 RF OD (mm)Class 600 RF OD (mm)
2”92.192.192.1
4”157.2157.2157.2
6”215.9215.9215.9
8”269.9269.9269.9
10”323.8323.8323.8
12”381.0381.0381.0

For RTJ flanges, the protector must cover the ring groove without contacting the groove walls. Push-on caps for RTJ faces have a recessed center to bridge over the groove.

Why Flange Protection Matters

A standard ASME B16.5 raised face flange has a surface finish of 125-250 AARH (3.2-6.3 micrometers Ra). This serrated (phonographic) spiral finish is machined to specific roughness to create micro-channels that the gasket filler compresses into, forming the seal.

Common types of damage that flange protectors prevent:

  • Radial scratches from dragging across steel surfaces during handling
  • Dents and gouges from impact with lifting equipment, pipe ends, or other flanges
  • Corrosion pitting from rain, seawater spray, or condensation during storage
  • Contamination from sand, mud, weld spatter, and debris
  • RTJ groove damage: a single nick in the groove makes it unable to seal an RTJ gasket

Flange protectors are removed at the point of assembly, just before installing the gasket and stud bolts.
