API 600 vs BS 1414: Gate Valve Standards
API 600 and BS 1414 are both standards for steel gate valves with flanged and butt-weld ends. They share the same foundation (BS 1414 was historically aligned with API 600) but differences exist in scope, specific design requirements, and adoption history. On international projects, valve datasheets sometimes reference one or the other โ knowing what changed and what didnโt prevents procurement errors.
When Each Standard Is Used
API 600 is the dominant standard worldwide for bolted-bonnet steel gate valves in refinery, petrochemical, and oil and gas applications. It covers flanged, butt-welding, and welding-end gate valves in pressure classes 150 through 2500, sizes NPS 1 through NPS 24 (larger sizes by agreement).
BS 1414 was the British Standard equivalent, technically identical to API 600 (it adopted API 600 by reference). BS 1414 has been withdrawn and superseded by BS EN ISO 10434, which itself references API 600. Legacy project specifications and Middle East/UK-origin projects may still reference BS 1414.
Specifications and Properties

Comparison: API 600 vs ISO 10434
Since BS 1414 is withdrawn, the relevant comparison is now API 600 vs ISO 10434:
| Feature | API 600 | ISO 10434 (BS EN ISO 10434) |
|---|---|---|
| Basis | API original | Incorporates API 600 requirements |
| Additional requirements | API specific supplementary | ISO-specific annexes |
| Regional adoption | Americas, Middle East, Asia | Europe (via BS EN), international |
| Typical project reference | Oil & gas EPC worldwide | European and international EPC |
| Relationship | Source document | Derived from API 600 with ISO framework |
Cast vs Forged Gate Valves
API 600 covers cast steel gate valves (NPS 2 and above). For forged steel gate valves (typically NPS 2 and below), API 602 is the applicable standard. The boundary between cast and forged valve specifications is defined in the pipe class.
