CAMPROFILE GASKETS


Camprofile gaskets are “semi-metallic” gaskets that are widely used in the petrochemical industry. In this article, we define what Camprofile gaskets are, describe their typical configuration and types, give an overview of the materials used for their core and layers and report the dimensional charts for camprofile gaskets suited for ASME B16.5 flanges.


 

WHAT ARE CAMPROFILE GASKETS?

Camprofile gaskets, alternatively called  “Grooved gaskets” or “Kammprofile gaskets”, are used in many industrial, petrochemical, power generation and nuclear installations (to seal flanges, heat exchangers, superheaters and, other pressure equipment). In general, Camprofile gaskets are specified for processes with constant high pressure and temperatures that require strong bolt-load and resistance.

Camprofile gaskets consist of a metal core, generally stainless steel 304 or 316, with concentric grooves on either side. A sealing layer is usually applied on both sides and depending on the service duty the material for this layer can be graphite, PTFE (Teflon), asbestos free gasket sheeting material or different types of metal (like aluminum or silver). The sealing layers protect the flange surfaces from damage in addition to reinforcing the seal of the gasket on the flange.

The recommended flange surface finish for Camprofile with sealing layers is from 3.2 to 6.3 μm Ra (125-250 RMS), also referred to as a smooth finish, however stock finish is acceptable as well.

The thickness of a Kammprofile gasket depends on the assembly circumstances, but the common thickness is 3 mm. All Camprofile gaskets feature a standard profile with a 1 mm Cam pitch and a maximum groove depth of 0.5 mm.


TYPES OF CAMPROFILE GASKETS

This type of gaskets is available in two main configurations, i.e. parallel root cores and convex root cores, and designs: with/without centering ring, with floated centering ring attached outside the sealing area (“loose outer ring”).

FEATURES OF CAMPROFILE GASKETS

The wide seating stress range (minimum to maximum seating stress) of the Camprofile gasket makes it:

  • Depending on the chosen layer material, Camprofile gaskets can resist temperatures up to approx. 1000°C
  • Can resist fluids pressures up to 250 bars
  • The gasket will not damage the flange surface and can be easily removed
  • Suitable for varying temperatures and pressures
  • Tolerate assembly faults (inaccurate bolt tensioning)
  • Suitable for light and heavy flanges
  • After assembly, the thickness of the sealing material is extremely low (0.1 – 0.2 mm), thus reducing leaks and failure rates
  • Camprofile cores are re-usable after cleaning and relayering with a new sealing material. This is critical for expensive applications, such as heat exchanger gaskets that are made of exotic, expensive, materials
  • Reduces maintenance costs and fluid’s leakages

LAYERS MATERIALS

The most common layer material for Kammprofile gaskets is graphite and PTFE (Teflon).

Graphite layer is recommended as it has a number of advantages:

  • Excellent gas tightness qualities
  • Non-aging properties
  • Very good chemical resistance
  • Resistance to high (fluctuating) temperatures and pressures

PTFE is also widely used due to its excellent chemical resistance, resistance to temperatures up to 250°C  and excellent sealing properties for gas applications.
