Reliable BWG and SWG Tube Size Chart

Reading Time: 5 minutes

BWG and SWG are alternative measurements for steel tubing sizes (outside diameter and wall thickness). BWG stands for “Birmingham Wire Gauge” (or “Stubs Iron Wire Gauge”). Each BWG number (example from 10 to 22) represents a specific steel tubing thickness, which can be converted in inches or mm. SWG stands for “Standard Wire Gauge” (also called “Imperial Wire Size”)  and is an alternative way – to BWG – to indicate steel tubing’s wall thickness.

  1. Dear Sirs.
My name is Stacy, I’m a purchasing Manager of an Innotex system company.
We are a Kazakhstan company, we are engaged in the production and installation of charging stations for electric cars. We opened a representative office in Europe in the field of renewable energy . We are interested in purchasing a metal profile for installation of solar panels. We would buy samples for the test. We are ready to regard the quotation for more quantity
    40*40 – 12 meters, wall thickness 2mm – 1 pc.
    50*50 – 12 meters, wall thickness 2 mm. – 1 pc.
If that is possible we would like you to deliver that city of Espoo.

  2. Clarified my doubts and provided me the knowledge required to confidently source the material required. top job. Thank You one and all

  3. Dear Sirs/Madams, I believe the wall thickness values, in inches, are a factor of 10x too high for the tubes of gauge 18, 16, 14, and 12. No criticism here; I’ve made many mistakes in my life! Just trying to help.

  4. I pay a quick visit everyday a few web pages and information sites

Hydrostatic Testing: A Crucial Examination for Safety and Reliability

The hydrostatic test consists of filling a piece of equipment with a fluid at test pressure, for a given period of time, to check the existence of leakages. The test is passed if the equipment bears the test pressure without any leakage.  HYDROSTATIC TEST The hydrostatic test is a common procedure to test piping equipment, like pipes, valves, and fittings (i.e. all products that shall withstand pressure when in operation. When this type of test is not possible or recommended, the pneumatic test is a suitable alternative. The hydro test is executed by skilled personnel by using chlorinated water (or other colored fluids) to check the existence of leakages in pressure-containing equipment. Before starting a hydrostatic test, the staff should pay attention to the testing fluid chemistry and how it may impact the equipment. PNEUMATIC TEST A pneumatic test uses compressed air or inert gases to test a piece of equipment. Pneumatic tests are generally executed on low-pressure equipment or small parts or when a hydro test cannot be executed for whatever reason. A FAILED TEST (VIDEO) The video shows how the test is executed and a failure example

Double Ferrule Compression Fittings

Compression fittings are used to create leak-free tube connections easily and quickly. Double ferrule compression fittings feature an outer nut, two deformable ferrules in soft alloy or non-ferrous metals and, a tube fitting body and are available for metric and fractional tube sizes. When the fitting nut is screwed on the tube, the ferrules get deformed to create a tight seal. Swagelok and Parker are the two main players in the compression fittings market. COMPRESSION FITTINGS Compression fittings allow the connection of two imperial tubes (or fractional tubes), two metric tubes or, also, the connection of a metric tube at one end and a fractional/imperial tube at the other end. A common size range is between 1/16″ and 2″ for fractional sizes and between 2 and 50 mm for metric sizes). Compression tube fittings are rated to the maximum working pressure of the tubing to be installed. Double ferrule compression tube fittings are largely used across multiple industries, such as downstream petrochemical, pulp & paper, laboratories, aeronautical and shipbuilding, defense, power generation, semiconductors manufacturing, and heavy industries. HOW TO INSTALL COMPRESSION FITTINGS Ferrule fittings are easy to assemble and disassembly, as shown in this online tutorial from Swagelok tube fittings: The tube has
